Balance and Rocket Fuel Matcha Lattes
Last night we went to dinner and a play with my husbands family. It was really fun, but I am struggling with this whole work life balance. At this point I feel like I could work the whole weekend and do nothing else. Then after spending 6-8 hours prepping materials for school I feel so burnt out that I just want to read, or snuggle the dog, or obsessively listen to true crime podcasts. My favourites are: Sword and Scale, Criminal, Case File, And That's Why We Drink, and Wine and Crime. See I have a problem. I like these way too much.
Anyway. As a new teacher with three new courses this semester I always feel like I could be working, but them I am turning down opportunities to spend time with people. I know it is normal for new teachers to struggle with finding this balance, but that is where I am right now. And you know what maybe balance isn't a thing. Maybe we all just do our bests and that is all the matters. I love teaching, so I am happy to put in that extra work. Honestly that feeling with a class goes really well, or a student leaves you a nice note, or you have a really fun class, or you get something really big and important across - it just makes everything worth it. There is no better job in the world.
Anyway yesterday I went for some of the life side of things! We went to a restaurant called Sidedoor, I had trout tacos in a lettuce wrap. I know trout tacos sounds a little weird, but they were really very good, plus it was actually the only taco out of 6 or 7 that they could make gluten free. That was a little sad, because some of the other ones sounded REALLY good and my husband kept exclaiming how yummy they were, but that is life. I also had some brussels on top of cauli puree with shaved egg yolks on top. They were kind of smokey, and the shaved egg yolk was super cool. This side dish was fantastic and I could 100% eat it over and over again! I wish I knew how to recreate that smokey flavour. Yummy. It was very tasty and really fun to have someone else cook for me!
Then we went to see Les Mis. These tickets were a gift from my in-laws for Christmas, and we went with my husband, brother in-law, and parents in-law. This was probably one of my favourite Christmas presents! I love seeing plays, and it makes me feel so fancy-schmancy, The play was so good!! The set was out of this world, and the singing was ridiculously good. So much fun!! It turns out that the living part of work - life balance is pretty awesome.
We are also going to an escape room tonight. So killing it ;). HAHA. Except I spent 8ish hours Saturday and Sunday prepping school materials. I am trying at least. I will get there at some point.
So given this balancing act or lack of it may not come as a surprise, but I just cannot drink coffee. I LOVE coffee. But even after a decaf I end up with a headache. Silly, but I am sure it is my body telling me I have enough cortisol and DO NOT need to spike it any further with coffee. Instead of coffee I really really love matcha. I know it has some caffeine in it, but it seems to be not enough to give me a headache. I like to amp up my matcha - it is part of my morning routine and I can actually take a moment to sip it before heading off to my day. It just sets my up in the right way, both because I pack it with fat and protein and because I just take a minute to chill and breathe before heading into the day.
